Are you ready to take your next step? At the New Year it’s natural to ponder your next move. Unfortunately, it’s also common for people to pressure themselves to get going—ready or not. The challenge is to determine whether any fears arising are a normal accompaniment for new ventures or important safety signals…flashing just to make sure you have what you need before you proceed.
Here’s the tip: First check your energy for the excitement/dread ratio about your next step. If excitement is 70% or higher/dread 30% or lower you’re likely good to go. If you’re at 60/40 or even less excitement, it may be time to take a closer look at what your fear is trying to tell you. Be sure you’re ready, however, to discover something that may involve delaying or changing plans.
If yes, bring your attention to your body to see where you’re feeling the fear/dread. Your body won’t lie or take you up into the eternal debating squad in your mind. (If you have trouble with this or if you encounter numb/frozen energy consider getting professional help.)
Once in your body, imagine putting a mic up to your fear and asking what it needs…more time, money, research, collaboration, inner work? Ask for an image, a sound, a sensation, a word. Be tender and patient. Learning to listen to deep, inner wisdom is a process.
Remember, your next step is about YOU…what’s right for you…what you need. There’s no rush. The good news is you’re asking the right questions, and looking in the right place. Nothing is more important than being true to yourself.
