Not Just the Three R’s – Earth Fair
by Carolyn Chase
While Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are still important acts, patience, persistence and politics are also essential to protect the environment.
We cherish the progress made during our 30 years of producing the Earth Day Fair in Balboa Park. But we also must confront the powerful forces now pushing back against environmental protection. For most of the Earth Days I’ve been involved with, polluters didn’t concern themselves too much because environmental issues were always secondary (at best). Conservatives still cared about conservation. The most visible pollutants were mostly regulated.
But with climate change effects now clearly visible, the wealthy and powerful have taken control at the national level, and are fighting back with a vengeance.
We shouldn’t be surprised. Remember the wisdom of Mahatman Gandhi: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” We’re well into the “fight,” but the winning is not assured. The march of progress doesn’t happen without the concerted efforts of lots of citizens on many fronts.
